Dentist — Historian — Communicator of Classics

Matt Lupu is a scientist by training and a historian by trade. After semi-retiring from a career in dentistry, Matt began graduate work at Florida State University in Classics - learning Greek, Latin, and Classical Archaeology. He has worked on excavations in Italy, Greece, and Israel. His dissertation looks at the intersection of philosophy and leadership in the late Roman Empire.

His passion is learning and sharing knowledge, particularly about the ancient world. With the field in decline and departments at ever-growing risk of closures, Matt cares about bringing the ancient world into the modern day, using different media platforms to make Classical Studies and related fields accessible to everyone.

His current outreach project, the Matt Lupu Podcast, looks at how the ancient world affects us today. What does it mean to study ancient cultures, and why should we care? You can find more information about this project in the "Podcast" section of the website.

When he isn't thinking about history, Matt loves to travel, bake bread, and spend time outside, whether it's growing vegetables or kayaking in unknown waters. He enjoys learning about music history (especially rock and roll) and can recite The Godfather from memory.

The work of Classics outreach will take all of us. The more podcasts, YouTube channels, projects and programs there are, the better chance we have of keeping the field alive for generations to come. If you want to get involved or collaborate, reach out to info@mattlupu.com.
